Oprah has a good system on her web site. It explains how much you should be spending on rent/mortgage, transportation, etc.

You may find that if the money is in your checking account, you spend it so it may be good to put a certain amount away in savings first thing everytime you get paid. Whatever you can afford is fine - even if it's just $10. Aim for 10% eventually, though.

Before you buy ANYTHING you don't need, write it down in a little notepad (just keep it with you) and wait 24 hours. Then think about it. If you still really want it AND HAVE THE MONEY AVAILABLE, maybe buy it.

Cut up your credit cards except one that you keep for absolute emergencies (but you may not want to carry it with you).

Keep track of all your expenses so you can balance "real life" against a budget. Come up with a realistic budget and stick with it.

Unfortunately, there's no quick answer. It's just being really consistent.

You have to spend time either earning more than you spend or spend less than you earn. A good book to read is The Richest Man In Babylon by George Classon.

A great read from a very long time ago and it has helped Hundreds of Thousands of people for almost 2000 years.

I have applied what the book says and I swear by it.

A great saying is wages give you a living
Profits give you a lifestyle.

If you do not like the way things are ,change them
for you are not a tree!!

First start with disiplining yourself by writing down all what you are in debt for and what you have coming in and if there is some left you need to take that amount and either save it yourself or join the credit union thru work.If you have credit card debt you need to double payments until they are paid off and don't use them unless you can pay off the balance each month. You have to tell yourself to stop impulse buying and buy just what you need until you get things in order.

If you are serious - Think of something important that you would love to buy but cant afford today. Start saving for the same. If you can, start saving for a house / child's education / Merc car / Rolex watch...

pay all your bills right when you get your check, fill up your gas tank for the week. then with whats left cut in half and give it to someone (say mom dad?) to hold for you. you'll have less to burn.
