I think it's funny that a lot of these people seem to think that you would dress gothic for THEIR attention.
Nevermind the idea that one might dress gothic to communicate to other goths (especially goths of the desired gender) that you have similar interests to them.
However, the only thing you really can do is ignore them. They're giving you a hard time because they're in a "caveman" mindset: i.e., "OOGH! That person look strange! Me threatened by things I don't know!!"

Well, it seems from what you've stated, they're not giving you a hard time but just inquiring into something that they may not understand. I would have to say it's just a human's tendency to try to understand the different or unknown. As for the a**holes who are meaner than just asking questions, they are responding that way for the same reason, they just don't understand the culture. People out there give plenty of different cultures and races a hard time every day just because they're different. If you like what and who you are, you will just have to get used to this sort of thing and understand that it is human nature.

because they don't know what to make of you. I have dreadlocks and people are always asking "is that your real hair?" Plus most "Goths" are not really goth, they just like the look.

no offense but why are you goth? what do you understand about the culture? what is it you are attracted to? goth to me is a style of building from the gothic era. its not just dressing in black and and chrome chains and big dragons. dragons have nothing to do with goth. as curious as you are to know why people ask -- we are just as curious to know.
i believe you can dress and believe anything you want so please dont be offended because that is not my intention.
just be polite and smile because it takes alot of guts (or balls) to ask somebody something so personal.

Why do you care what people think or say? I thought that was the whole point of dressing like that. If you didn't like it you wouldn't dress to get attention. And there's a difference in being curious and being nosey.

Being a bit different always draws attention to yourself. It makes people curios about you:) that's not exactly a bad thing. then you get to share who you are with them.
