Try both out and see which one you like more. If you like them equally then go for which one you play better. I personally think drummers are hot but Im sure your doing this to enjoy music and not just look good

This depends on you and your personality. Drummers are the "back-bone" of the band, yet they are kind of "behind the scenes" (unless you are Tommy Lee). I played the drums for 5 years in a band. Our lead singer quit one day and I got out from behind the kit and took the microphone. I never looked back...

The energy from being "out front" is totally different than being behind the set. I think bass players experience the same thing. No, they aren't the lead guitarist who gets all of the best solo opportunities, but they are considered a "front man" and a main focus of the act.

From a technical focus, I think most would agree that you could become a really good bass player before you could become a really good drummer. There isnt as much of a learning curve with bass.

Regardless, have a great time and make some cool, innovative music. Dont be a follower.

Yay! I like these kind of questions. ^_^ Learn how to play both instruments. Then decide which one best fits your personality. I know how to play the Violin, Clarinet, and a little bit of the Flute, Trumpet, and French Horn. Out of all those, the clarinet best suits my personality. You can play both bass and drums at the same really. You can play one if you are in a band and the other when you are relaxing at home or w/e. Playing a musical instrument is an excellent way of expressing yourself. I wish you the best of luck! :) [/end of band geek moment]

ok first off playing bass is not boring like some of the ppl that answerd said..and its just as hard to learn dif styles and technics..like flea from red hot...les claypool...geddy lee from rush...victor wooten..all great players and def not ignored...if u want to just stand there and pound out root notes all night and look like a tool then u could play bass in mins...but if u decide to do bass then take the proper time and learn it...and whoever said the drums was the back bone of a band...buzzzzzzzz wrong they are the beat and tempo..the bass is the back bone and fill....some of the answers u got u shouldnt listen to...its not about being cool or having the chicks dig u ..its about the music and what u enjoy....

I play guitar, and it was a pretty obvious choice because I always found myself paying attention to the guitars and the melody of the songs I liked, rather than the beat or the drum fills. Try listening closely to some of your favorite songs and decide what parts you like the most and could imagine yourself playing. Don't worry about being "cool," people who are trying to be cool have got the wrong idea.

which do you feel more in tune with when listening to music? go to a music store and see if they'll let you play around with both, ask lots of questions, then go with what feels right. It's not about playing the one you think is cool, it's about where your talent lies and what you are in tune with.

Ask the local bands what the demand is like, if your heart isn't into one more than the other, then might as well follow the money!
