genetic information is passed to offsprings during meiosis, where homologous pairs cross over in the process called synapsis. fragments of the chromosomes breakoff and is exchanged with its homologous pair. when the pair separates during anaphase, genetic info randomly moves to opposite poles. in the end of meiosis, 4 haploid cells are formed, each containing different genetic information.

Starting with a normal cell with a double set of chromosomes, a daughter cell is created with only a single set: one of each pair of original chromosomes is chosen at random to appear in the daughter cell. You get one of these from each parent at fertilization, and that reconstitutes the double set. Cell division then takes place, with all of the chromosomes being replicated in each descendant.
