Well first of all Emily never really has a boyfriend because her father doesn't really allow her to. They think no one is good enough for her. She also i belief goes and buys rings because he is of lower class. For a period of years they are not seen which is not unsusual for a secretive woman like her so the town just suposes that they've wed since he is never seen again until his corpse is found in the form "of embracing" in the bed.

I sure hope this isn't for a test or homework!

She buys him a "toilet set," which has nothing to do with toilets -- it's a brush, comb, maybe a mirror or shaving mug. Back then, a nice woman would *never* buy such personal items for anyone except her husband; it would be considered slutty.
