The Fiero program was shut down in 88 because there was a lack in sales. This was mainly due to the fire problem they had in the engine compartments in the 84 and 85 model years. In the 86, 87, and 88 years, the designs had changed and sales held steady with the introduction of there new GT body style. Pontiacs were often compared to the toyota MR2 in magazines, and often were superior in performance and looks (GT Models). Toyota did not buy the fiero plans like someone mentioned...they were being built at the same time!
When 88 came along, the GT was the most popular fiero. But many people were still worried about the fire issues, even though they were taken care of by the end of the 85 model year.
I own 2 fiero GT's....they are great cars for cruising in. They are fun to drive and today get many looks. If you look on E-bay...it is not uncommon for a good condition GT to fetch very high dollars. These cars are becoming very rare, and highly prized!
Corvettes and Fieros are 2 different cars. Corvettes are the sports car...and fiero is not. Pontiacs actual plans for the fiero were NOT for them to be sports cars.....but simple commuter vehicles that would be great on gas!!!!!!

When Pontiac Engineers were working with Saturn on the New Solstice they were Quoted to the Tune of... "Small and Sporty reminds me of the Fiero"

Fiero GT was a Better Car and the Iron Duke 4 cylinder was a solid buildable engine (for a 4 cyl)

Test Drive the Solstice and you will Have more fun than buying a Used Fiero.....

Fiero was a mistake for Pontiac and it's parent (GM). It lasted less the Chevrolet Corvair. The Corvair lasted for 10 years and was a greatly executed design platform.
Scare the Corvette? As my boys say, 'Put down the pipe and step away'.

Forget the Pontiac referred to in first comment. Get one of those Saturn Sky RL (Red Line). Saturn did their homework and cleaned up the problems before sending it to the market, unlike the Pontiac version.

Pontiac stopped building the Fiero because people didn't buy it. Why would Pontiac build more of something that people didn't buy in the first place?

this is funny, i was bored just last night and i watching feris buler's day off, however you spell it. and saw the fiero, my brother has one and got to thinkin they were pretty cool looking cars. and i asked myself the same question, i would think they have the technology to make it not catch on fire and make it pretty sporty. with the coming back of the camaro and challenger hell why not. i actually started drawing what i thought a new fiero might look like. im no great artist but it looks pretty cool. i would buy one if the price was right, and like before they made it to save on gas, well i think we could use that more now than ever. fast little poor man's sport car that is good on gas, i say hell yes

It's true that they could not sell enough of them. They were being built in a factory that needed much higher sales to remain profitable. GM never marketed the car worldwide (as Toyota did with the MR2).
But, don't forget, MR2 sales were never that stellar either. The public was chomping for a roadster, not a two-seater targa top with middling performance.
You can be assured that the new generation GM roadsters are scaring the Corvette sales group

The Fiero was a fire trap as mentioned earlier because the engine would catch fire. It was nicknamed the Fire-O. Gm sold the plans to Toyota and they re-worked it and made the MR-2.
