The formula is H= -Plog(P) The log is to base 2, not 10.

I have an answer but do not know how it is calculated.

P=0.39 which gives H=0.53

can someone tell me how this is?

I'm not sure what you don't understand with this. Just plug the number in.

To avoid tables I will use approximations. 0.39 is about 0.375 = 3/8, so let's use that instead.

-3/8*log2(3/8) = -3/8*(log2(3) - log2(8))
= -3/8*(1.6 - 3) (I am using 1.6 for log2(3). sqrt(2) = 1.41, so 2^(1.5) is about 2.82)
= -3/8*(-1.4) = 4.2/8 = .525, not bad for approximations.

The relation between the various log functions is: if X = log10(y), then X = 0.30103 log2(y). The number 0.30103 is the logarithm of 2 to base 10.
