A lot of attention is (rightly) being paid to the MIT MediaLab project to create a cheap, handcrank-powered laptop computer for schoolchildren in Third World countires. Will there be a version available for sale to the public?

Best word is... most likely... however... the... how shall I put this... consumer version in developed countries will most likely NOT have the hand crank, might be slightly smaller and will probably have a LiON rechargeable battery but all the other features will be there such as a dual mode display. We'll also probably have more configuration options... but at a price of $250 to $300... not the $100 price I think you mean. All this is speculation partly from stuff I've read and partly intelligent guesses.

It has just been announced that the OLPC will be available for public purchase, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6246989.stm and it will cost you $200 to $300 because you have to buy two, where one goes to a participating developing country.

Why not a solar powered one? School takes place during daylight hours, so I think it would be more feasible.
