Those stickers are known as Buckeye Leaves. At the beginning of the season the helmets are bare. Players earn them for outstanding play-- ONLY IF the Buckeyes win the game. So outstanding play within a lost game wins you no leaves. The tradition was started back in 1968 under Coach Woody Hayes.

those are "pride stickers"
when ever the players do really well in a game or practice, depending on how well their perfomance was, they get a certain amount of pride stickers
the more pride stickers, the better
