Put baking soda on it then pour some vinegar on it. It will clean it all up, then rinse it with water. You can use coke or pepsi too but they can leave a sticky residue if you don't get it rinsed well enough.

Go to a checkers or some automotive place and they have brackets to hold your battery in place.

While you are pouring Coke or baking soda on the battery, pour some into the tray the battery sits on and clean off the residual with water. When the battery acid escaped from the cells it ran down the sides into the tray. To do the job right remove the battery. This will give you the opportunity to find out why and correct the reason(s) the battery is loose. Any substance containing a chemical base will neutralize acid. This is a true story: Once with no alternative, I used toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean off a thoroughly corroded terminal. It worked well, although it spattered all over the engine compartment.

Pour or run a hose over it to dilute any acid. The white stuff you see is not acid, it is lead and copper oxides formed by those metals. There may however be some trace amounts of acid present so wear rubber gloves and a pair of goggles or glasses. Remove both battery cables. Use a wire brush to clean off what you can from the battery terminals and the connectors. Avoid contacting the terminals to the metal parts of the car with the brush. Use plenty of water to rinse. Now scrub the connectors and the terminals with ''Brillo'' or steel wool and dish detergent. Once you have rinsed you want to see shiny lead everywhere, inside the connectors as well. Now put a light coat of petroleum jelly on all surfaces (again, inside and out). Reconnect the cables and you should be good to go!

If the battery has been leaking acid, then due to battery not being properly bolted down, then it may not last long.. but you can clean the battery by sprinkling baking soda on it, and then rinsing it with water, then repeat...but if your battery is cracked in any place.. I suggest replacing it..

Baking soda mixed with water isn't as sticky as coke...you'll want to figure out somehow to secure the battery too; bungee cord, duck tape or find the original brace.

Jug of good old fashioned boiling water all over it. Might need to clean the terminals right up with a wire brush - just do it carefully otherwise you may rip off any wires.
