Don't know anything about being a record producer, but for starting out with some equipment I would say....

I would start with the Numark CDMix 3. Not only can you play Cd's and MP3s, but this is also a mixer. The item being designed that way means that it costs way less than purchasing a mixer and a CD player separately. Retail around $399.95 ( http://www.numark.com/products/product_view.php?v=overview&n=138 )

For speakers I would start with either the American Audio DLS 15P. Retail around $299.99 each ( http://www.adjaudio.com/product.asp?ProductIDNumber=1237&cat=Speakers ) or The Gemini GX-450. ( http://www.geminidj.com/gx450.html ) Also $299.99 each. These speakers are powered and have an amplifier built into each of them making them waaay easy to plug in and use. There is no need to figure out wattage or anything like that.

Buy a $25 dollar radio shack mic, $20 Sony headphones, and a $40 folding table from Office Depot and your in business for a total of just over $1000.00

You may also need an extension cord or two, but everything else works pretty much out of the box without any additional wires or cords to buy.

Of course, this is not the greatest gear known to man, but it will work well enough to allow you to make money and buy better equipment down the line.

depends on what you want to dj. if you want to dj from records you will need turn-tables, and a mixer. if you want to be able to scratch you will need specifically direct-drive turn-tables. the best out there are technics 1200 (tech 12's) but they are a lot of money. stanton tables are a good second and good to learn on.

there are a couple different ways to dj though, and now with mp3 players you could even do it with 2 mp3 players and a mixer. final scratch is a cool way to dj too, it allows you to scratch your mp3's through a record. best to go to your local music store and check out all there products in their dj section.

in terms of record producing because it is such a tough industry might be best to look into which courses you could take. on top of connecting with teachers (who probably work in the industry) they will have the top/newest software and equipment.

good luck.
