Coupons are for attracting customers who are not familiar with the shop, and therefore are probably reluctant to trust it with a big job. Best to discount simple services or mandatory warranty services.
The coupon should express that the shop is knowledgeable, honest, reliable, dedicated to high quality work, and they'll guarantee the work they do. That guarantee part is the deal maker for many people. Honoring most warranties helps too.
I have a great mechanic for my favorite ride, so that would have to be one stellar coupon to get me to take my baby there.
I have a couple of "beaters" (crummy cars) that I'll take to the cheapest place that can do decent work, so cars like that might be easier to get in with a coupon.
