My husband, who's in the army, came to visit for the holidays on Dec. 20th. I am 4 6/7 weeks pregnant, according to my nurse. The 20th was three weeks ago, so how could I be almost 5 weeks pregnant? My husband is wanting an explanation, because after giving birth to my daughter in Jan 06, I haven't had a period yet. I know normally its determined by the first day of the last period, but I haven't had one! Please help!

Let me make this clear. Dont answer this question if u're a male. Unless u're a doctor. I havent had sex with anyone outside my husband.

SOME OF U ALL ARE REAL JERKS. But for the ones who are considerate enough to answer with some sense, (thank u) I DID breastfeed fulltime, up until 4 months ago, so its very common for a woman's menstrual cycle not to return for a few months. AND I HAVENT BEEN OUTSIDE OUR MARRIAGE. He doesn't think I've cheated. He just doesn't understand how a woman's body works and wants me to explain what's going on. Thanks.

Because pregnancy starts on day 1 of your period. By the time you conceive, you are already two weeks pregnant according to how they measure it.
It starts with the life cycle of your egg. So being 5 weeks pregnant is completely correct, even if you had sex 3 weeks ago.
If your husband won't listen, have your doctor talk to him and print out some articles off the internet. :)

The nurse could be wrong.
You might have had an irregular cycle, which would put the due date/gestation date off. Your doctor uses a formula based on a 28 day cycle to determine your due date. If you don't have a 28 day cycle, which most women don't the due date can be off. Your periods can be irregular for a thousand reasons....hormone irregularites, stress (and with a spouse in the military I can imagine you are stressed out!!) and the fact that you are a new mother will also have alot to do with this. It can take up to 2 years after the birth of a baby to have your cycle become regular again. And if you're breast feeding still, this will also make your cycles irregular or non-existent.
If you really want to know how far along you are, have an early ultra-sound. The doctor can tell how far along you are from this. Bring your husband with you if you can, or send him the pictures and have the doctor explain it to him
Check out the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" to learn more about how the female body works....it will enlighten your mind!! http://www.tcoyf.com
Good luck

I gave this answer to another person already. When you conceive it's usually the 14th day from the first day of your last period. When they count gestation they include these 14 days into the pregnancy term of 40 weeks. So while you are 40 weeks pregnant at delivery, you are actually pregnant for only 38 weeks. They start counting pregnancy from the first day of your last period. They do not go from the size of the baby.

Until you're further along around 8 weeks when you can get an ultrasound, the nurses estimates can be off by a few weeks. You could just have more hormones in your blood. The way they typically calculate how far along you are is by the first day of your last period. Since you didn't have one, the nurse probably esitmated. Tell you husband that they don't measure your pregnancy from the date of conception.

Before you or he panics, you need to realize that the nurse could be wrong and if what your saying about not having an affair is true, than she has to be wrong, Ask your doctor for an ultra sound, this will give you a much better idea of exactly how far along you are. If the the nurse is making her assumption based on the size of you uterus, you might have more than one in there!

My suggestion is to consult with a obgyn that is specialized in development. I know when I was pregnant, the nurse told me a different date...but when I went to see my doctor he said that my due date was different because of the fetal development.
Remeber a nurse isn't a doctor. Secondly, the nurse usually goes by a general menstration period not one that is customized by your own body...that is bascially how my doctor described it to me. He's a geneticis too so he was able to really give me some awesome advice.

Ignore all the cheating stuff. If you weren't having a period, your body must have been preparing for it. You always add 2 weeks onto the pregnancy, since you don't have a period to go by. Could you imangine if we had to go by the date conception happened. Noone would ever know!!! Your husband should look at babycenter.com and it will be explained to him. Good luck!

Pregnancy starts counting two weeks before you actually get pregnant {on the first day of your last period}. So you are 5 weeks along, but actual gestional age is only 3 weeks.

The math of pregnancy is kind of dumb. The first two weeks of your pregnancy, you arent actually pregnant. Kind of like 9 months of pregnancy works out to be 40 weeks....(10 months). Only YOU know if you were unfaithful, and you say you werent, so I guess this would be the obvious reason for the mathematical discrepency.
good luck

your question make s no sense at all. You had a baby a year ago,and are now pregnant again? If so,I'm assuming you breast fed the baby for the entire time . so, you got pregnant the first time you ovulated after having the baby. relax, the dates are always mixed up as to how far you are pregnant.there is no exact science. if theonly time you had sex was Dec 20, then that is the date you count from.
