The computerized options cost a lot of money, but generally, if it's power you want, I'd recommend a used 8" Meade LX90, LX200, or a similar used Celestron.

You may be able to get some of these for under $1000. You may even find some under $700 which are computerized.

A telescope's "power" is not in the magnification, as people wrongly assume, but in it's aperture. This is the diameter of it's mirror if it's a reflector and lens if it's a refractor. Most large telescopes are reflectors, or some type of catadioptric...which also uses a mirror.

The larger the diameter of the mirror or lens, the more light collecting ability the telescope has, and the more powerful it is.

For a serious telescope used for general viewing, I recommend nothing under 8" of aperture.

You can find used telescopes on www.atromart.com or www.cloudynights.com

You can sometimes find them on eBay too of course but learn about the more before you buy.

I would go the Meade store on eBay. They also list items in their factory outlet. Since it sounds like your new to the hobby I would start by getting in contact with a local club. They will usually have some scopes that you can use or maybe even borrow. They will also be able to point you in the right direction for getting some used stuff at a lower price.

My friend has this telescope - it's really good and he says that the ones made in Russia are the best. I don't know though if you can get them in a computerised version..

Get one with a really big mirror. I have one that has an 8 inch and I can see craters on the moon. Circles around Saturn and the Comet a few years back.

Contact your local astronomy club and ask for advice from the members. In my area they are a section of a society which has local history, architecture, natural history, birding, marine and conservation sections. Your library may have contact details.
