Currently, Massachusetts is the only US state where same sex marriage is legal. In 2004, the state Supreme Court of Massachusetts ruled that prohibiting marriage to a same sex couple while allowing it for an opposite sex couple was illegal under the state's constitution.
Civil Unions, which have similar but not identical rights of marriage, were enacted by the state of Vermont's legislature in 2000, which was followed by Connecticut in 2005 and New Jersey in 2006.
California enacted a domestic partnership registry in 1999 that provides some (but not all) spousal benefits to unmarried couples.
Hawaii, Maine, and the District of Columbia have laws that provide partial benefits to unmarried couples.
All of these laws apply to state benefits only and are unrecognized in other states due to the 1996 passage of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from either recognizing or conferring any rights to same sex couples and also prevents other states from applying the full faith and credit clause of the United States Constitution to these unions.

Massachusetts allows gay marriage, Vermont/Connecticut/New Jersey allow civil unions that are de facto marriages, and California allows domestic partnerships which are also de facto marriages.
