or use candles with rings on it.
Each ring can represent a half hour as the candle burns.

Of course, you could get a sundial to tell time, or you could just look at the posittion of the sun (or moon) in the sky and estimate the time. You could also listen to the radio or just ask someone. An hour glass would also work if you know the time the hourglass started. You would have to be a natralist to know this, but some flowers open at exact times of the day, maybe even night.
