Beneficial? Well Ronald Reagan seemed to think so, but it sounded like BS then and it still does now. Essential? How could poverty and starvation be considered essential? Population control maybe?
Stratification is neither, it is simply a byproduct of our economic system. Capitalism requires that there be capitalists, and that most of them profit. If they didn't, those with the assets would not risk them. Those without capital often live paycheck to paycheck, if they have any income at all. Capitalism would fail if not for free enterprise, and the unfortunate truth is that this ultimately leads to stratification. Communism has failed in almost every example of its application, but the governments of those nations that have tried it were not democratic. In fact most have been totalitarian dictatorships. A Democratic Socialist system may be the best answer for our future, in terms of a world government with an interest in reducing poverty and eliminating hunger.

One of the most fundamental requirements for a "society" is the establishment of individual societal identity. A system of rules that establishes each and every member's position in that society. Without societal identity, you can't have a society.
The lack of an established societal identity, contrary to what's his name's statement, is what causes all communistic groupings to fail. It is the strong government at the head of the communism that allows it to last as long as it does....it is NOT what causes it to inevitably fail.
As to the rest, one need only look at any grouping of animals in the world to know that it's not Reaganomics that causes stratification.
Without stratification, there would be no way to promote the welfare of the society over the individual's needs. If all else were equal, the weakest would always draw the society down. By establishing a hierarchy, the grouping can promote the ideas/members/practices that are most beneficial to the grouping while at the same time providing for the greatest possible amount of benefit to *all* the members.
