Poe is in a struggle with his inner demons, as personified by a big black bird than mocks him.

It is the battle of a man's sanity over his sentimental attatchment to his passed beloved one. The raven acts as a tormentor to his mind reminding him of the one thing that brings him the most misery - the death of his beloved Lanore.
As he seeks to rationalize the Raven's company, he simultaneously finds himself seeking to resolve his own sense of longing for a love that has left him in a dark, desolate place. The Raven is there to torment him until he finally gives in.
