I took German from fifth to ninth grade. I hated it, though, and never really learned it. Occasionally I'll have dreams where I'm speaking it, or where other people are. I pay attention (in my dreams) and it seems like they're using the right words. How is it my subconscious can make sentences in a language I don't really know?

when one is learning a language, our subconscious takes in more information than we think. since you have taken German for four years, you have been hearing it and learning it all the time therefore when dreaming at times your dreams will be in that language. Ive been taking french from kinder garden to college and Japanese from grade nine to college. when i dream, some of it is actually spoken in those languages and i completely understand it and at times converse with the people in my dreams in said languages. all in all, when it comes to languages, if one is around it long enough, they tend to pick upon things weather consciously or subconsciously and when dreaming, have dreams were it is partially in that language or all of it is. don't worry about it-its very common among people who know more than one language.

It's possible that you learned enough to speak it well... but it's also possible that you are mistaken about your dream. I've often had dreams that seem to make perfect sense and all is right, when I first wake from it. But when really thinking about it, or trying to tell someone, suddenly realize that things weren't quite the way I thought. What I'm trying to say is that it was only your perception that you were speaking fluently... maybe because you would like that... but in reality it could have been gibberish!

Well thats undoubtedly unusual. The moment dream would had been triggered through considering how unusual the opposite was once. Have you observed any films with international languages? Was it truthfully legit Japanese and Spanish? Or only a language that your mind created and also you classified as such?

After a trip to Germany, all my dreams were in that language and I spoke and understood much more than I did on my trip. I think a part of brain retains it because we work so hard to learn it...maybe.... Auf Weiderzein! (no spell check in German, i'm afraid)
