If my car has a decent amount of gas, it will run fine. However, if the gas gets low to around a quarter of a tank, the car will die and have problems accelerating. If I put more gas in the car, then it drives fine again.

What could be causing this? I was thinking maybe there was something in the gas tank that somehow causes problems when the gas gets low.

only two real posiblitys

1 the fuel pickup has some how moved away from the bottom of the tank

2 the fuel gadge is not reading correctley

the third one is very unlikely but posible...the fuel pump is wearing out and it actually needs the extra weight of the fuel to maintain a sufficient amount of pressure

you can get sludge in the tank over time or the fuel pump in the tank needs to be fixed or repositioned . Either way you could find out easy by looking. If u have a newer car, in the trunk there may be a round cut-out that u can turn and pull out. Do that and there u will see access to the fuel tank. Inspect!

Sounds to me like the gauge is reading wrong and you are just running out of gas.

You might also check with the dealers srevice dept. and see if there are any tsb's (technical service bulletins) about this condition.
