The car is a Renult Laguna 2.0 RXE the gearbox appears to select a gear but does not drive the wheels. I can put the car into gear without using the clutch with the engine running and the gear box appears to have been leaking oil. There were no sighns of the gearbox dieing befor hand no clutch slip or any thing i was driving it and lost drive to the wheels. When its in gear the MPH needle reeds witch would indicate drive from the engine to the gearbox. any ideas

so you can put in gear without the clutch.. sounds like you might have a problem between the shifter and transmission.. like maybe the shift linkage is inop. or something isn't making the connection..when you put into gear... do you have any resistance on the shifter... Does the clutch feel and different when pressing.. do this..if you can.. take the cover off the shifter, and look down to the tranmission and see if anything is abnormal...

I'm not familiar with that particular car but I had a Plymouth do that.
The r/f axle came out of the trans-axle just enough to not engage with the splines.
The motor shifted to the left because of worn motor mounts.
The MPH works of the output of the deferential so that shows that gear box and clutch are working ok..
If the gear box was broken as suggested there would have been loud noises.
I think your problem is between the differential and wheel.

Think if you open up your gear box you will find a lot of little broken metal bits. On the other hand if you can select gears easily you might find the syncro is doing a good job and may be the differential that has gone AWOL. Sounds nasty.

I would check that both drive shafts are not turning when in gear and standing , if they are not moving either your clutch has collapsed or your gearbox is caput. If the shaft is turning and it is not moving then it has taken out the driven splines in one off the hubs

Somewhere there is a connection between the clutch and gearbox that is gone. Cheaper to buy seconhand box than get it repaired at garage.

Sounds like a job for the garage could be your selector or gearbox itself or diff hope you have a bit of savings. when garages charge from £30 to £60 per hour that's what my local vauxhall agent charges anyway. But good luck hope it's not serious
