Nah, it's just when their calendar ends. When Columbus ventured out past where the 1492 maps ended, he didn't fall off the edge.

Reading up on this a little more, the Wikipedia article makes it very clear the Mayans did not believe 12.21.2012 is the end of the world - see the link below. This theory is obviously something cooked up by conspiracy theorists with overactive imaginations.

The Mayan calendar ends on that date. It doesn't mean the apocalypse is coming. Cultures have predicted the apocalypse over and over again and have always been wrong. Just like with Y2K, who's to say this time it'll be any different.

It is the beginning of the 13th Baktun of the Mayan Long Count calendar, and the galactic alignment of that dawn signifies the birth of a new sun. Whether you choose to live a new life is up to you.
