i made up some agar-agar, but it doesn't seem to be like i remember it form high-school. i'm thinkin' that it needs some sort of nutrient for the bacteria to eat, and that the agar just retains water for the bacteria. i think we used chicken broth back in school. does anyone have any ideas as to an easy recipe for nutrient broth? i've found some recipes for the stuff, but they're more complicated. it's just a science project so it doesn't have to quite as technical as it does for a lab.

Use beef broth, agar, and some yeast. Boil to mixture to kill the yeast.

Or make LB as follows: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysogeny_broth

The agar we used most in the hospital was bloo agar made from outdated blood from the blood bank.

Chicken broth probably has too much salt and fat and needs sugar. Try the saltless fatless one and add sugar.
