I dont require or have any interest in any racist comments :

Why is that people call people who have different skin tones other that white the word coloured .
This is so meaningless and stupid . I mean if anything people whom have pink skin are the ones who are coloured arent they . Because our skin goes pink and red in the sun , and blue and pink in the cold .
But most people of colour mostly go a darker shade of the colour they are not a completly different colour all together . Its a bit silly dont you think ?

I mean all my black friends would find being called coloured an insult and would much rather be described as simply black

The term originated a long time ago, probably in the 1940s or earlier. It would have been used because white people were not used to seeing non white people and did not have a politically correct, even if inaccurate, term to use for the skin colour of people who were not white.
The terms we use now, such as black, are not actually descriptive either as most people, however dark their complexion fall short of actual black. Also we use the term 'black ' to describe some people who have quite fair skin but are of mixed racial heritage.
I hope this helps.

I don't know why your "black" friends get all worked up about being called "coloured".

In his book "A passage to India" E.M.Foster describes an English teacher in that expatriate community in India, who refuses to be referred to as "white" but insists that he is "pinko-grey"!

I like that approach. What's wrong with a skin that is by nature darker than yours?

I don't use the word 'coloured'. I actually thought that word was outdated. If someone is black, I will say they are black (whether its light or dark skinned), then there is olive skin, pale skin etc etc... I don't know anyone that uses your description.

just a description I guess, to say someone is coloured, and then perhaps go on to explain more. Probably not worth getting personal over

It was the PC lot who brought this in .We used to call negros-black,caucasians-white and orientals-yellow.Someone somewhere decided that colours per se were offensive. We are not supposed to say blackboard or whiteboard any more...were black people or white people REALLY offended by these names? Of course not...then it started on Chairman, policeman, fireman..who cares I still call them by their proper (old) names..sod the PC lot.
