Don't laugh at this, but my brother in law told me this. You boil some water, and add a very strong onion, you take it off the stove, and let it cool for a few mins, then put a towel over your head, and let the vapor, and onion smell open your sinuses. I assure you this works. ~~~~

Mix about a cup and a half of warm water with 1/4 tsp of salt and a pinch of baking soda. Cup your hand and pour some of this mixture into your hand. Snort the mixture through your nose. You'll be able to tell when you have had enough. Don't snort it all. Put it in a sealed container, and do this every 8-12 hours. It sounds weird, but it helps. In the morning warm it in the microwave (WARM not HOT) and do it again. Make sure you make a new mixture every 1-2 days. This could also be used as a nose spray if you'll be on the go.
When you do this you will either feel very stuffed up or better than before. If you are still stuffy, don't worry. Don't blow your nose, just wait and it'll fix this problem.
Also, elevate your on the end you sleep or use extra pillows. Take a hot shower before bed and drink a hot drink. Use breath rite strips if you have some. Use a humidifier if you have one.

If you have a humidifier, use it. If you don't, consider setting up a pallet in the bathroom. Turn the shower on really really hot, close off the crack under the door, and let the steam unclog you. My 5-year-old defies all medicine, and we've done this when we didn't have money for Vicks or something more useful, or if his problem wasn't overly serious.
You say you don't have the money to buy medicine, but if you have about $1.75, you can get one of those nasal vapor inhalents. It looks a little like a tube of chapstick. You just open it up, tilt your headback, and breathe in the vapor for a few seconds. It unblocks your nasal passages pretty effectively.
Other than that, drink lots of fluids, and if you drink hot tea or cider, hold it under your nose while you're drinking and breathe in the steam.

I have had sinus infections for years. I finally had surgery to correct my deviated septum but I still get sinus infections. I am always taking medication to decongest me, and for my allergies. I still get stuffy and can't sleep. Here are the only things that work in my opinion:
1. Get yourself a good humidifier and crank it up.
2. A hot shower or bath might open you up enough to fall asleep.
3. Prop yourself up on pillows so you aren't coughing.
4. Drink lots of water and get lots of sleep.
5. Avoid allergens - seems simple but even though I am allergic to cats, I have two. So, I know that it isn't always easy.
6. Try using a Neti pot - it's weird but it does help
Any other solutions are just a waste of time and money. If your place is dry, a humidifier is crucial. Make sure that if you invest in one, that it is easily cleanable and won't be blowing mold (big time allergen) on you. I did live in a place that was really humid and in that place, I got a dehumidifier to control the mold instead. Most of the air cleaners with HEPA filters are supposed to work well but I haven't noticed that they help much. A humidifier or dehumidifier can be expensive but cheaper than constantly missing work and missing out on your life!
My mom used to feed me a hot totty when my throat was really sore and it sometimes helps. I am not a big honey fan either but I've suffered through drinking this drink and it can help. Make yourself a cup of non-caffeinated tea, put in a tablespoon of honey, and a shot of whiskey. It is basically like cough syrup. It soothes your throat and the alcohol makes you sleepy. Personally, I find a hot bath works better with my humidifier cranking. Usually if I can get a good night's sleep, I get better faster.
Good luck!

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse. Do you suffer with this all of the time or do you have a cold. A bottle of eucalyptus oil is not very expensive £2 to £3 (UK) you can add 3 to 6 drops to a large cup of hot water and inhale the vapours or mix 3 drops to 10ml of vegetable oil and rub it into your chest. The best one is to put a few drop onto a hanky and inhale it.Camphor oil will do the same. As will menthol. If you suffer with this all of the time you should see your doctor who will refer you to a specialist. you may even have an allergy

Try putting your head over a bowl of hot water with a towel over the top, if you have some Vick in the house you could put a drop in the water. The steam will help unblock the nasal passage. Have a good night. Sleep tight.

Hi there!
I'm fighting a cold myself, so I know how you feel! Try sleeping with your head propped up on a few pillows----this gives your nasal passages more elevation to remain opened. When you lay your head down flat your nasal passages compress making it harder to breathe. Like other people have said, try taking a hot shower and breathing in the steam. Take care and I hope you feel better soon!! :)

remember, all herbs need to be research by you to make sure they arent going to interact with any over the counter or perscription medicines you are currently on, and researched to make sure they are safe for any preexisting medical conditions you have.
With that said, I reccommed "Fenu-thyme" (fenugreek and thyme) pills bought at a health foods store. It helps to clear up escessive mucus.
I REALLY reccomend "XLEAR", prounounced "clear". It is an all natural product that is NOT habit forming. It contains water, saline, Xylitol (a natural sugar substitute), and grapefruit seed extract (which is a natural antibiotic, which is not resistant to bacteria like perscriptions are). I use this stuff, and my sinuses just DRAIN like you wouldn't imagine. Its amazing! A little bit goes a LONG way!

try sleeping sitting up, or at least put a bunch of pillows behind you so your head is elevated. if that doesn't work you should really invest the 3 or 4 dollars it costs to buy off-brand affrin. it really works well and keeps you clear for like 12 hours.
