It's typically a small apartment or flat located on the main property. The "mother-in-law" suite as they are commonly called usually has a separate entrance, kitchen, bath, bedroom and is close to the main house without being attached.

You might be finding the second portion of a home attached or the space is so small they can call it Mother in law for the zoning of the town you're in.

They are common in some areas of Baltimore suburbs as a small house (think two car detached garage size) with a small kitchen, small living room, small bedroom and small bath. Usually situated in the back yard of the main house.

let's face it..your mother in-law is a ***** and she has withheld sex from her poor husband for the past 30 years. He is just getting even with her. she has also has had affairs with Harry the guy at the funeral parlor. Let your father in-law enjoy some of the spoils from that rotten marriage. Give the guy a break.

That's a very small house behind the main house.

Or it could be a house with an attached section with it's own entrance, bath, kitchen.
