At 6 months your baby should still be on their own schedule. This is not the right time to try to get baby to sleep through the night, or bend to the shedule you want them on.

You can try to help baby settle for the night by starting a routine. This is a perfect time for you to sit down and read to baby. Babies loooove to be read to, and this is a great way to establish a good bed time routine. Eat, bath, dress, brush teeth and hair sit and read and go to bed. Keeping a good routine will calm and relax baby. This will help baby go to bed on their own (without alot of stalling), especially as they get older.

I always let my kids let me know when nap time is. They know when they are tired and you can tell too. You should keep baby on the same schedules (what ever it is) and they will eventually nap less and sleep through the night more. Typically, even when on solids, babies will start sleeping through the night at 8-12 months.

Read "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child" By Marc Weissbluth... a really good book on how to get your kids well rested. You can use it with CIO (which i did when my son was 6 months old).. and he slept through the night after 2 nights.. he is now almost 2 and sleeps 7-7 and naps 11-1 every day.. before that he was up 8-10 times a night.

The key is to not have an overtired child.. the more overtired he is, the more easily he will awaken at night. The book does say that some kids (especially breastfed) will need a night feed until 8-9 months..

But at his age, he should have an early bedtime, between 6 and 8... and should be able to sleep 11-12 hours (with only one feeding).. He should be transitioning from 3 to 2 naps soon enough too. Good nap times are 9, 12 and 3 (if he is a 3 napper)or 9 and 1 if he is a 2 napper.. they dont transition to 1 nap until about 18 months or so..

The book will explain it a lot better. You can also go to familysleep.com, they follow weissbluths methods.

Good luck! It can be done!!!!!

6 months is too young to wean from nighttime feedings. He still needs his milk / formula / breast (whatever) till at least 12-18 months old. He should have a short morning nap (about 45-60 minutes), an afternoon nap (1-2 hrs) and then to bed around 8pm. Each child is different, so you might have to adjust a little bit.

I have a four year old and 18 month old twins, all who slept throught the night at 7-10 weeks old. The key here is CONSISTANCY. Babies need routine and they need to be taught EVERYTHING, including how to put themselves to sleep. Before I even get into how to get them to sleep you need to get their eating habits in line. If they wake up hungry, no method of sleeping will work. We typically eat three meals a day. Our body gets use to this. If you are feeding them whenever they are hungry, they are just snacking several times a day and this will make them wake up hungry. Get them on a 3 or 4 meal a day routine, same time, same amount of food every time. Depending on when you start your day, a 7a, 11a, 3p, 7p schedule. If they get hungry before its time to feed them, hold them off as long as you can. Give them a bottle of water, but try your best to keep with this routine. AND NEVER FEED THEM ANYTHING DURING THE NIGHT. After a week or so their metabolism will adjust and they will not become hungry through the night. Once this is established, when rocking your child or whatever your night time routine is, put them to bed right before they start to fall asleep. You must CONSISTANTLY put them to bed awake. This will teach them to go to sleep on their own. When they start to cry (and they will) wait them out. If the waiting become to unbearable for you (please wait AT LEAT 30 minutes) go in the room, and calm them down. If you can do this by just patting them great. If you have to pick them up, dont sing, dont say anything to them (or they will get accustome to needing the singing to go to sleep). Just hold them until they calm down and then AGAIN PUT THEM TO BED AWAKE. This will take several times and last a few days but they will get the message and start putting themselves to sleep. They now have habits so it may take longer than typical but I must stress, BE CONSISTANT and dont cave in or you will be starting all over. Just keep telling youself that sleeping through the night is not only good for you but the baby too!! Hang in there and good luck!!
