Wow, that's a really tough question because my favorite book at 8 years of age is completely different than now.

So, I guess I'll name them in terms of what was my favorite at certain ages. "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak; The Little House on the Prarie series; "Gone With the Wind" by M. Mitchell; the vampire books by Anne Rice; and most recently "The Life of Pi" by Jan Martel and "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger.

But if the Harry Potter books had been out when I was younger those would definitely be my absolute favorite of all time 'cuz I love them even though I'm am adult.

I remember this really good book I read in like 7th grade...it's called "Searching for David's Heart" by Cherie Bennett. I think it's actually a movie now and was aired on ABC Family. It's just the best book you will ever read. And I really think that if you pass up the chance to read this then you're really missing out.

I also loved "Where the red fern grows" by Wilson Rawls. Its a book about a boy who wants 2 coon dogs, but his parents are poor. He finds an ad in the paper for two pups for 50 bucks. He works for 2 years and saves up the money. He travels out into the city to get his pups. He trains em and they become the best coon huntin dogs. In the end, the pups died( lil ann, the girl, died because she couldnt live w/o old dan) and old dan died after he had a fight with another animal. Where they were burried, a red fern grew. Its really a sad story of never giving up. I loved it a lot.

The House of Sand and Fog by Andre DUBUS III

It is such a good story about a former Iranian military officer who fled Iran after the fall of the Shah to settle in America. He has given up his life of prestige and wealth for humble circumstances, but desperately tries to protect his family from the ignominy of it all. As a parallel, there is an American girl also struggling with survival and dignity and their paths cross. Dubus is a sensitive writer who sees both sides to the coin.

Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas. The hero is Edmond Dantés, a young French sailor who, falsely accused of treason, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Château d'If. After staging a dramatic escape he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies. A novel of enormous tension and excitement, Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge, with Dantés, believing himself to be an `Angel of Providence', pursuing his vengeance to the bitter end before realizing that he himself is a victim of fate. The author did a great job describing the emotions of the prisoner.Disbelief, denial, self pity, madness, apathy and finally hope. For God's sake don't see any of the movies based on the book. They don't do justice to the book.

I love questions like this. Where to start?!

Bleak House by Dickens has to be one of my all-time favourite books. It's simply amazing; I laughed out loud so many times and also sobbed away heartbroken. Recommended to all.

Possession by A S Byatt also very good. I'm reading The Historian at the moment and that's also very enjoyable.

Also The Stand by Stephen King.

There are so many more. If I think of any you must know I will re-post. Thanks for all the recommendations on here, I always like new ideas for reading material based on others' recommendations. Thanks also for asking the question!

And "Frozen Music" by Marika Cobbold is good

...and the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Phillip Pullman!

And anything by Madeleine L'Engle or Kate DiCamillo. I like the Jeeves stories by PG Woodhouse...you should get the tapes read out by Martin Jarvis
