I love questions like this (but I'm not going to say why, it would be rude of me).
Ok, I'll assume that this is not one of those 'trick questions,' and begin by saying ~
I don't know. What do you do when your best friend says he's in love with you?
I'm being cynical here because it's an apocryphal type of question ....never having had my best friend tell me that he's in love with me ...where your question implies that it's an every day occurrence for us all ....and where you supply no clues as to your sex, age or how you feel about your best friend ...which is preeeety dumb of you if you are really really really looking for answers.
My only hope is that you never have to give a witness statement upon which the freedom of another human being hangs on.
Best of luck.
Sash.

I am going to assume a couple of things....1-you are female & 2- your best friend is male.
i think the first thing you should do is say 'Thank You.' In a world with billions of people in it, we can never have enough folks love us. Let him know that he is your best friend and that you value his opinion & what he thinks and feels about you. Acknowledge that it must have been difficult for him to come forward with this info. Then be honest with him about your feelings & thoughts. If his words surprised you, tell him that. if they filled you with a sense of fear that you might be losing a good friend, tell him that, as well.
Having a bestfriend of the opposite sex is always going to lead to one person or the other having, at least a moment or two, where they perceive their loving friendship as affection. That's ok, it helps us to define love & loving relationships. If you are not interested in crossing that line with him, tell him so ... but don't forget to tell him what you value & appreciate in him.

Explain to them that it is easy to mistake the closeness of a friendship for something more. It is easy to start getting jealous and annoyed when you see your best friend with other guys/girls. Especially if it seems like they cant find the qualities that YOU have in another guy/girl. Stress to them that the love of two friends is a special bond that shouldn't be jeopardised.

Ah, very common. Especially if your best friend is a guy, and you are a girl. (As I am assuming). It is important to be honest with your best friend, as well as being honest with yourself. If your not having mutual feelings, then tell him. If you do have mutual feelings for him. Then go for it. Keep all of your options open. Give him a chance. Who knows it might work out. Good luck to you!

What's wrong with that? Don't you love him too? If not, just tell him that you're just interested in being friends only and leave it at that. If you do, tell him you love him back and start acting like it. Run some serious tongue down his throat or something. Gawd!!! Is that so hard?

Go for broke if you like him if not then you tell him you love your friendship w/ him and couldn't take a chance that it doesn't work and you lose a good friend.

If he's really your best friend, be open and honest-to some extent. Are you not in love with him? Tell him so.

you tell him how you really feel about him, if he doesn't accept your answer then why is he your friend, either that or you could give the new spin on the relationship a try. you could do so many things, but it is all in your decision, Good Luck with that
