What point was the author trying to make about utopian societies?

They cannot exist because perfection is an ideology, not a state of being.

The point was to show how a Utopian (or perfect) society isn't always what it seems. She also based some parts of this book on her own life. If you want to know more about this, look up "Lois Lowry's Acceptance Speech for The Giver" and read her speech. In her speech, it says where her ideas in the book came from and what was her point in writing the book.
