I don't know why it didn't occur to me to ask my doctor this question at my appointment, but: which form of ultrasound is a "pelvic ultrasound" - meaning is it the internal probe kind, or the external on pelvis area kind? I am 11 weeks pregnant, and all my prescription says is "fetal viability, pelvic ultrasound".
When I called to make the appointment, they told me to drink 32 oz. of water. I don't know if this makes a difference for what type of ultrasound it is.
I assumed, and am still hoping, it would be external, but my friend said hers was internal. I have had internal before and I know it's not a big deal, but I would much rather have external. Thanks!

I'm getting a total mix of answers! Everyone's insisting it's either one or the other.

Wear comfortable clothing for your ultrasound examination. Most pelvic ultrasounds for women are done by inserting a small transducer into the vagina. For this exam your bladder should be empty. Please do not bring children with you as they get bored and may disrupt the exam.

For children and for women for whom a vaginal examination is painful, the study can be done by firmly placing the transducer on the abdomen. For these abdominal scans, you should drink several glasses of water before the exam so that your bladder is as full as possible before the study begins. A full bladder helps to better see the uterus, ovaries and bladder.

In a pelvic ultrasound, organs of the pelvic region are imaged. This includes the uterus and ovaries or urinary bladder. There are two methods of performing a pelvic ultrasound - externally or internally. The internal pelvic ultrasound is performed either transvaginally (in a woman) or transrectally (in a man).

I would think it's safe to assume because it doesn't state internally that it's an external u/s

Good Luck

Hey hun!! I've never had one done but been looking them up on the net, Apparently they can determine whether you have PCOS, endometriosis, Uterine tumours, Ovarian cysts, cancer of the womb, Pelvic inflammatory disease, depending on what time in your cycle you have your scan - I am pretty sure they can determine whether you are ovulating. The one thing I wanted checking was my fallopian tubes, as I've had PID I am so worried about having an ectopic pregnancy, I would have requested a laproscopy had I not fallen pregnant. If they see nothing wrong on scan they will then send you for this procedure also. Good luck huni - You certainly don't look like you need to diet! Aww I really hope you get your BFP soon xxxx This website is quite informative I would take a look if I were you hun xxx

This will be a probe kind. I had to have several and they are really not that bad. Have a full bladder to help get better results.

You are right they use this long probe and do the ultrasound from the inside and you always need a full bladder. CONGRATULATIONS

It is on the outside, it is just easier for them to see the baby if you have a full bladder. Good luck how exciting getting to see your baby.
