I did the 2 mile walk away the pounds DVD last night, using the weights, and this afternoon I noticed that my right uper arm (between the elbow and shoulder) is sore-especially when I move it. I've been doing the walk away the pounds thing for about a week now, but I've only done the one mile, and I've been really out of shape for a while. Could the soreness in my arm have to do with the extra excersise, delayed pain from doing the 1 mile, or something else? What should I do about the pain? It's not swollen, it's just sore.

The soreness could be muscle building. Muscles build bulk by making microscopic tears during exercise, and regrowing the tissues for several days after the exercise. It is normal to experience a dull muscle ache after doing a strenuous workout. But the pain should not be sharp and it should not be in the joints. It usually takes 48-72 hours for muscles to completely recover from strenuous activity.

You may need to vary your workout - maybe do 2 miles, followed by a day off, then a 1 mile day, next a 2-mile day, and then another day off. Try different combos to see what works best. You should try to avoid strenuous exercise if your muscles are already sore - this can actually cause the muscles to tear faster than they can heal.

It could be tendonitis or bursitis, brought on by the weights. I have tendonitis in both upper arms. I can pretty much keep it at bay with painkillers. Ibuprophen is best but it's rough on you if you have reflux. I find that acetaminaphen works too. It hurts the most if I have the arm up and then try to bring it down. It hurts at night sometimes too, if I don't prop it up. On my right side, I had a few weeks of ultrasound therapy and it did help quite a bit. I should have it done on my left side because even though I can keep the major part of the pain at bay, I can't do things like put my hand on my hip, like if you're talking to someone or whatever. So there are different degrees of it, and you can make it go away.

If you have a regular doctor, you could call and get advice over the phone as to whether it's safe to continue to use the weights or not. It would seem a shame to quit part of a workout that you're enjoying.

Try taking some ibuprofen or advil - should help. You just may have overdone it.
