I was very close with my great grandmother. She died when I was seventeen. We used to sit and talk for hours about what her life was like when she was a sharecropper and picked cotton all day in the summer time.
She was a rare breed of southern lady.

I never knew my great-grandparents but my grand-daughter is lucky enough to have know her great-grandparents and her great-great-grandmother.
My mother's mother lived to be 98 and was in excellent mental health till the end of her days. My grandaughter was about 10 at the time so she should always have some very strong memories of her great-great-grandma.

I still at 34 have a set left alive and still married and I have been able to grow up with a great grandfather and a great grandmother from both sides of my family! And all of my grandparents are still alive also. I'm very lucky :-)

Oh what a wonderful question. Yes, I remember my great grand father. I was about 7 and he was probably in his early 90's. I sat on his lap once. He only had one arm. Lost the other in a farming accident when he was 20. He was amazing.
I remember my great-aunts too. Now that I'm a great-aunt, I wonder if my grand neices will remember me the way I remember mine, as little old ladies. I hope not. I want them to remember me as kinda young-ish.

Yes, in fact I was lucky enough to meet 3 of them! One great grandpa and 2 great grandmas. My great grandpa died when I was 4 and one of my great grandmas died when I was 5. However, I was lucky enough to have the other one until I was 12. She was a great lady and I miss her very much...she was so sweet.

Yes I was. Sadly, my German wasn't good enough to converse much. She had a rule, no English was allowed to be spoken in the house. Guess she should've stayed in Germany, huh?
My other great-grandmother who was alive at least allowed us to speak English in the house. My only real memory of her was that she made the most awesome quilts you've ever seen.
If we hadn't used them so much growing up, we would've had some great memories in the quilts she left behind, but they were so comfy we used them until they were shredded!
