The Republic of Hawaii was the formal name of Hawaii from 1894 to 1898 when it was run as a republic. The republic period occurred between the administration of the Provisional Government of Hawaii which ended on July 4, 1894 and the adoption of the Newlands Resolution in Congress in which the Republic was annexed to the United States and became the Territory of Hawaii on July 7, 1898.
Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States on August 21, 1959.

its a loaded question but Hawaii came the last state to join in 1959. thats about the safest answer. there is big debate whether the annexation was "legal" but a cool trivial fact is Hawaii also has the only palace in the Entire USA since it was its own country.

the guy who talked about the debate whither it was the annexation was illegal, the united states government recognizes that the annexation of Hawai'i and the becoming of statehood was illegal, thats not up for debate anymore. There were like 5 obvious things that were done illegaly, i cant remember them all right now but if you want to know you can look it up.
