Since we have had so many on here latley I just wanted to ask why people who are not Accual breeders feel they want to breed their animals. Can anyone give me a good and I mean GOOD reason for breeding pet quality animals or mix breed animals! I have never heard one yet and I am sure I still will not by asking this question. I use to breed Rotts accaul my family has breed them for years. As of 5 years ago I stopped because there where to many unwanted Rotts in the pounds. It stopped with me! Please give a Good reason.

I understand the loving animals part but if you loved them you would not want them to sit in the pounds and rot, or be running the street and as for the easy money believe me breeding is not easy money most of the time with shots, tails, de-claws and the every once in awhile sick puppy we where in the hole most of the time. The only reason my family breed is because my grandfather loved the breed and started his stock with his gran-champion dogs years back!! So no offense but just no a good enough answer to the breeding problem

I don't think there is a good answer to this question. You are 100% right. There are enough unwanted animals in this world. The only reason I see for it is money.

Well, I guess you could *label* me a back yard breeder. I only did it once though. The reason I did it is because where I live, basset hound puppies are hard to come by. Seriously, if you look in the paper, you cannot find them anywhere around here. And, there are no basset hound rescue groups close by either. Plus lets face it, many people want a puppy. We actually had to drive to a different state to get ours.

Well anyway, several people I know had been wanting a basset hound, but couldn't find them. I met a lady with a male basset hound and after some serious discussions, we decided to breed our dogs. This is something we took very seriously and made sure that our puppies got the best start in life. They all have homes waiting for them when the time comes and I tried to do this as professionally as possible.

I have a real love for basset hounds and wanted to be able to share that love with others that couldn't find one.

Flame me or bad mouth me if you want, it doesn't matter. I did it because I just felt that it was the right time to do it. Is that a good reason? Probably not, but to me it was enough of a reason. I am getting my dog spayed and will not breed her again, but have enjoyed this experience immensely.

Edited to add: If you noticed, I didn't mention money at all, but then I see someone else talking about how people only do it for the money, so I wanted to add something. I did NOT do it for the money at all. Yes, I am charging for the puppies, but I feel the my price is very reasonable. $250.00 per puppy. The cost of the mothers care and the puppies care, I am barely going to break even. Money was not a motivation for me at all. I don't really even see how people can make money doing this for a living, unless they just breed dogs constantly and without giving them the proper care, which I do not support at all.

You kind of answered yourself. There are so many unwanted pets in Animal Shelters. A lot of them are there because people bred their dogs to sell the puppies, and get money. There is also a lot of crossbreeding going on. I love and own crossbred dogs and horses, but there are a lot of people out there who do not, and won't buy them. So many animals get send to pounds, or animal shelters. Too many people breed their animals just for the money.

We began breeding Old English Sheepdogs a year or so ago, having only 1 liter a year. We bred them because in our area there are no breeders of sheepdogs and it was very hard for us to find even one to purchase without paying 2,000.00. As for mixed breeds.... I have no idea. I am not sure why mix breeds are so popular now but I would assume people think puppies are cute and would like to have them and when they find out how much they sell for they look at it as easy money.

I suppose those who breed are in it for one of two reasons, 1-they really love the breed and love animals, or 2-they really love the easy money.
