I raise and show llamas and I can tell you they are used for many things. Their fiber is used for spinning into yarn, or for felting, their "beans" are one of the best fertilizers available, they can be used as pack animals, guardian animals for sheep and goats, companion animals for other herd animals (like horses), 4-H projects, in their native countries they are very commonly used for meat (I could never eat one...they have such unique and amazing personalities). Llamas are quick learners and can be taught to do many different things. Two common and fun shows are a costume class and an obstacle course. Of course they can also be shown in conformation classes, pack and performance classes, showmanship classes, and there are fiber classes for the fiber. Llamas rarely spit at people (spitting is usually reserved for other llamas to resolve food and herd heirarchy issues). They can be stand-offish but they are wonderfully gentle once they have been trained in the basics and have established trust.

oh yeah - I live in Cornwall and on the train from St Austell to Truro you can see Llamas in one of the fields, they also keep them at Diary Farm Land. Could be for their wool or milk - not sure! I like them though :)

llama wool is very dense and nourishing and is made into traditional cornish jumpers and worn by ladies selling saffron cake at farmers' markets.
