Girl, just think of it this way - what would you do with extra space if you didn't have all this junk sitting around? Maybe relax easier, maybe spent more time reading a book you love or something else. Fill your life with memories, feelings, emotions, not junk.

If it is less of a hassle and reasonably inexpensive to buy a new one than keep an old one around "just in case", ditch it! The 1 year, 6 month rule is a GREAT one. Also, things go bad or don't work anymore if they get old (glue, for one, batteries, medicines, etc.) so keep that in mind as well -- if being old will affect how it works, junk it!

Last, think if someone who is too poor to afford things might have a better use for it than you -- that might give you the push you need to donate some of those extra things.

Good luck!

Okay-from one packrat to another-here goes: clothes, if you haven't worn it for a year or more, or doesn't fit-give it away for someone else to use if it's in good shape. Household items: unless it's heirlooms, etc., again, in good shape-give to an organization, ie: YMCA

I remember hearing a saying "If it doesn't give you joy and you've not touched it for a year, get rid of it."

Something I wish my wife would practice. She's a packrat as well. I had to build a 12x16 Barn to store "junk".

There is a group called Freecycle. The link is www.freecycle.org. Anyway, it is a place to list stuff you want to get rid of. The only catch is you can't get money for it, it has to be offered free of charge. You have to have a Yahoo email address to join the group. I know that there are several all over the U.S.. You might want to check and see if there is a group near you. I live in a very tiny town and there are about 6 groups within about 50 miles of me.

Donate it to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or a homeless shelter. You may also be able to donate it to a church that has a donation bank. If you want to turn you junk into cash and don't mind a little bit of hard work, then have a garage sale or try to sell some of it on E-bay.

Do you know other packrats? Call them and have a packrat party, by the time it's over, your home will be empty. (hey, where's my computer?)

If you haven't used it in the past year, toss it. If you haven't used it in the past 6 months, consider it and decide if you really will use it again. If you have 2 of something, toss one.. that should pare down almost half of what you have. However, if the item is still usable, I suggest giving it to charity, or having a yard sale.
