that have goldfish? Does anyone else find this somewhat amusing?!

Don't take this question wrong. I do not think it is amusing that the fish are dying, being kept inhumanely, etc. I do find it amusing however, that people associate goldfish with easy care, and ignorant owners. Why is it that they are the main fish being purchased by uneducated fish owners? Why not guppies, or mollies, etc?

No actually, it is not a surprise. While goldfish are one of the most well known types of fish that people whom are not familiar with the tropical fish hobby think of when they consider getting a fish as a pet, most people do not know enough about proper care. Beginner hobbyists usually start out with a goldfish, often time winning one at a carnival and assume that it is very easy to keep.

Goldfish are not an extremely difficult fish to keep, but they are not suitable for most beginners in the aquarium hobby unless you do at least a little bit of research first. Goldfish can actually be great pets and if taken care of properly some types can live as long as fifty years.

Goldfish bowl are two words that have become synonymous with fish keeping, but in all actuality goldfish require much more water and care then a bowl will provide and are not suited to small containers. To keep a goldfish healthy, I would not recommend that people have anything less then 10 gallons of water per fantail fish, and 2o gallons of water for comets (the type you can win at festivals) because they can get rather large. Unfortunately, this is something that people do not usually do because they want to see more fish in their aquarium.

Yes, it's because there are sooo many people out there who don't do their research first. They assume that the pet store or even walmart employees are God and that anything they say is true. When if fact 90% of the time those people are wrong too. They don't care about fish, they just want your money. If a fish dies they say "oh that's too bad, try this one here." Instead of trying to find out why there is a problem.

Then there are the people who believe so blindly that common plecos are good for a 20 gallon tank, that even when you link them to the first 7 pages on Yahoo! search, they still don't even bother to read them.

It's amazing how ignorant people can be about caring for goldfish. It is ironic that these are some of the easiest fish to take care of. I'll be truly amazed when someone asks why their pleco died. Those things could live in a bowl of soup.

Actually I find bettas with problems far to often. I work in a pet store and I combat goldfish myth everyday... Its sad, especially since a lot of people think that they are right no matter what. I've had people ask "to speak with someone who knows about fish" when I tell them I will not sell them 5 medium comets to live in a 1.5 gallon tank.

Yeah I see this all the time as well. My parents thought they were going to get my brothers some goldfish, but decided against it when i told them that goldfish are probably the most messiest fish around, disgusting.

Its not amusing coz quite often fish are suffering because of ignorance! The trouble is people think goldfish = 2 pint bowl and the fish die...not surprisingly. All you can do is try to help them to get it right;

Yes, Since answering fish questions I've noticed that too. A lot of people don't realize that fish need space to grow, So they may only have a 10 gallon tank...thats only 1 goldfish for that tank b/c they get to be 6 in. Another thing with goldfish is that they produce a high ammonia level from all the extra waste...and that can cause them to die. Goldfish are also prone to getting bladder infections. One way to prevent that is to feed the goldfish orange slices and green vegetables.

Yeah- goldfish are a hassle and most of the ornamental breeds are messed up because of "selective" breeding. They're dirty, nasty fish.
