hey Graham, over the Christmas holidays I decided to get a new computer, was looking for the ideal system whilst keeping the cost to a minimum, i found some fantastic web sites that let you customise & config your computer to whatever you require, if your into Gaming then why not customise your pc for that ? adding plenty of RAM and a fast graphics card etc, no need to get a pc off the shelf that may have a spec thats not exactly what you want ! anyway check out these sites....

best a luck.

Go to your local PC World, now normally i wouldnt touch them with a 20ft bargepole but go and have a look at the managers specials, about a month ago i bought a pc with the following spec...

Intel Viiv Technology with
Intel Pentium D Processor 945
Dual Core Cpu @ 3.4 GHz
2 x 2MB L2 Cahce
Dual Layer DVD-rewriter - 16 speed
500Gb Hard Drive
Nvidia Ge force 7300SE with 512Mb ram
1024Mb DDR2 memory
Built in card readers
DVB_T TV tuner card with remote control
Windows Media Centre Edition
Network, 6 USBs firewire and all the other usual stuff

Brand new, was only specialed because the box was open and the box containing the keyboard and mouse had gone walkies - the price, £300

Bargain.

Ask yourself what you intend to use the desktop for. The answer will change your buying decision and potentially save you lots of money. Many gamers want lots of disc space, lots of memory and a power processor. These options add a lot to the cost. However, if you are simply browsing the net and writing email...you dont need a lot of horsepower.

Try http://www.pricewatch.com for some comparison shopping. Read http://www.tomshardware.com for lots of technical info to help you make an informed decision.

regrettably very nearly all laptops under $1300 or so have not got even almost stable photographs enjoying cards. seem at something with something better than integrated or a committed '7400M' video card.. as those won't have the means to run Crysis medium. 8800M or comparable is robust, yet maximum are in gaming traces , seem in Dell's XPS line for examples.

Yes I am sure Dell would build you one to your own specs. I have a Dell Desktop and I have never had any problems with it. Their customer support is very good too.
