The gun always hurts more. Risks include hitting a nerve in your ear that can cause depression. Go to a real piercing place, not one of those places in the mall.

Having many piercings I will tell you, the gun doesn't hurt nearly as much as a needle BUT, in my experience I've always healed better when I've been pierced with a needle. With the cartilage I would definitely recommend going to an actual piercer and being pierced with a needle. When you pierce anything with a gun all it does is push the earring through the flesh, in the cartilage this increases the chances of developing keloids. The needle actually removes a small piece of flesh making a space for the ring instead of merely pushing the flesh out of the way. Good luck. Oh! And the needle costs a bit more but you are paying for "expertise" and quality jewelry. A piercer is trained to do just that, pierce. If you go to one of those places in the mall and get pierced with a gun those girls are sales associates at an accessory store that have received minimal training to shoot jewelry through your flesh.....I don't trust those places at all, have you ever seen how nervous those girls always look???

Guns cannot be sterilized very well. Go for a real peircing parlor that has certification and everything. Check the parlor out before you actually get it done.
The needle hurts less, I think. I got my ears peirced with the guns, and they hurt pretty bad afterwards. But they've used needles on another piercing I have, and while it hurts a good bit, they can be sterilized very effectively.
Make sure to take a painkiller before having it done, though, probably at least 30 minutes beforehand.

I got my ear peirced up there about 2 years ago. it doesn't hurt just to let u know that. Gun is way better than needle cause it's faster and there's a less chance of bleeding. If there is a claires you can go there and get it the cheapest it cost is 25.00 with earig and some stuff to keep it clean that they give you. the price depends on the earing u choose The healing is what is gonna hurt it takes about months to heal. have fun

I had my cartilage pierced in college, using the 'gun' method. In all honesty, it hurt worse that getting the lobe pierced but it still didn't hurt that bad.
I had my done at the mall. It wasn't too expensive, and I kept it clean so there were no problems. I'm 28 now; I took mine out about 4 years ago and have had no ill effects from the piercing.

Ive had 4 piercings in my ear cartilage with a gun.Yes it hurts, alot more then it does in the ear lobes. I have never had any problems with any of them. I would recommend that you only leave the starter earrings in for a few weeks before changing them to a different type of post earring because the point on the starter earring hurts tremendously when it continually pokes the side of your head. I had mine done in the mall, i think they are very reputable.

The gun causes great trauma to the ear and cartilage inside. It can often lead to scar tissue around the piercing. I fully recommend seeing a piercer for this. Shoudn't be more than 20 dollars, very well worth it, virtually painless.

I would suggest the gun, it's quicker period ! and it's not worse then the regular ear piercing. Go to a well known place to make sure they use new earrings. (they should be opening the package in front of you anyways)
