there is nothing you can do that would have anything but a negative effect on both your downstream and upstream rates. all updates are configured from the head-end.

The information is availabel on the Internet, however, I woudl discourage mod'ing the cable modem. The equipment is more than likely leased from the provider. If you hose the equipment you will have to pay for the replacement. You can purchase a cable modem for about 50 dollars US. If you do so, you will need to contact your ISP to have the MAC address provisioned.
