It is part of our survival instinct. We are afraid of things that will harm us or endanger our lives. Could you imagine a world in which no one was afraid? We probably wouldn't be here right now because we were not afraid of Hitler or we all decided it would be a smart idea to follow our buddy off the cliff? Fear is not a hindrence to our being. It has more pros than cons that's for sure.

Carrying on the thought from thisisabsurd...
Physiologically, fear can start adrenaline pumping, which can physically give you the boost you need in the case of flight or fight.

But why do we have to be SO afraid?
Socially and politically it can be advantageous to have people fear something that is counter or in competition with ones own society. It can also be used to distract public attention from real issues or scapegoat something other than the root of a problem.
Media has been and is being used to these ends today. A lot of fear is inculcated from above.

Peace

People are afraid throughout the world because often they have been raised in an oppressive system of conformity. Where their own guardians may not accept them or even outcast them if they don't conform to a religion, or a status quo and on.
Then in the world, people are expected to tow the line of society's structure. Maybe things are getting a little looser, but in many areas of the world, it's still oppressive.
Excellent question.

Fear is: False Evidence Appearing Real almost all of the time.

Of course there are things to be afraid of - you're not going to walk through the worst part of town drunk at 3 am with a bag of money and you're not going to go out and eat wild mushrooms unless you really know what you're doing.

Everyone is afraid, but unfortunately fear feeds on itself and gets bigger. You can push it back by taking some reasonable risks to attain positive results - realizing it'll be scary but it'll also probably be worth it.

Well, considering the state our earth is in, it's pretty understandable.
Wars, famine, aids and countless other things... sometimes its easier just to give in to fear. But those are the people who have given up.
We need to not be afraid and realise we can make a better world.
That's what I think anyway.

Fear is a great control mechanism if that is what you are inferring. Otherwise it is innate in all of us=racial memory ie caveman days (not so long ago,I'm afraid). Whoops!
