5 beans => 2.1g
1 bean => 0.42g

0.454kg = 454g

454/0.42 = 1080.9523809523809523809523809524 = 1080

There are 1080 beans whole beans. You can't have 1081 beans because you are missing about .05 of a bean.

Just invoke facts that you know, keep the units in order, and you will come out all right at the end.

Let beans be called B

0.454kgB x 1000gB/1kgB x 5B/2.1gB = (0.454)(1000)(5)/(2.1) =

The 0.454kgB is given. The first factor comes from the equality, 1000g = 1kg. The kgB cancel, leaving 1000gB. The second factor comes from the 2.1 g weight of 5 beans. The gB cancel, leaving the number of beans, which is what was wanted.

If 5 beans weigh 2.1g, then 2.1g/5beans = .42g/bean

.454kg = 454g

454g * (1bean/.42g) = 1080.95beans or 1081 beans
