If you are using a laptop for portability, get the bigger internal drive.
1) It is a lot more convenient to carry around just a laptop
2) It is tidier with fewer cables cluttering up the place
3) With an external harddrive, the laptop is suddenly less portable as the external drive will need a power source.
However, I recommend getting an external drive to backup files.

Well is really depends on the price and you budget. and what you plan to do with the laptop If you are an entertainment guy with lots of pics, videos, video games, and music files, id get the 120 GB. If you just want a portable PC, then go with the 40. Thats hte most important thing to keep in mind. How much are you willing to spend, and what you plan to do with your laptop. Also remember that a 80 GB external hard drive isnt free. It is also extra luggage to carry around and since hte whole point of a laptop is portability, it seems kind of pointless to me. It also drains extra batteries to have a external hard drives which again kinda kills the whole point of portability. and remeber that the world of technology is ALWAYS evolving, so a 40 GB is already bottom of the heap now, so in 2 years, ill be ancient, while a 120 GB is quite good. so the 120 is also a better investment if you plan to keep the laptop. So when you decide your choice, keep these things in mind. Im for the 120 GB.

This depends on what you will be doing with the laptop. If you need a lot of space locally then get the larger drive. These days it is almost impossible to find anything snaller than 40Gb ;) I personally do not value huge drives. Primarily becuase they can, and do, fail. So I have systems with 60-80 GB (they are common) and use a network attached storage drive to archive my data. Many applications, such as Microsoft Office and lots of games are now several GB;s in size. As such, having enough drive space to house your applications, anything you are currently working on and misc. items is a must. However, for long term storage...archive off to optical disc or another external storage medium.

Your exterior not hassle-free rigidity could teach as an icon on your reveal screen. basically drag and drop each little thing you pick on that rigidity. in case you pick to sparkling area on your device's not hassle-free rigidity then do not ignore to delete inspite of you flow onto the Lacie when you've checked that it has transferred effectively. in case you pick to commence putting stuff straight away on the Lacie then basically specify it because the vacation spot whenever you save some thing. you've a brilliant number of skill because it stands and that i'm uncertain why you pick to flow stuff onto the Lacie, till it really is for causes of backup, it really is of direction a good suggestion. it really is a shame you're literally not on a Mac, as you would possibly want to then have, on Leopard, the striking Time device facility which will advise by no ability dropping some thing ever lower back. in case you do not imagine you're a lot good at pcs make your next one a Mac - they're more convenient, smarter, and cooler than a computer, and far a lot less puzzling to apply. Vista is the position Mac become about ten years in the past.

you will get many opinions on this. 40 gig internally might be too small for programs to run efficiently especially the new ones. the external drives make sense from portability and when changing computers you can take the data with you. why don't you reverse it - put 120 in computer to hold programs and use 40 externally to hold data only. note this isn't much room for music or video files.

Well, if u really can't afford it right now, then I would suggest getting the cheaper one then later if u need, upgrade. It also depends on what u intend to do on it. What do u need the laptop for? If it's just cause u want it, then I would suggest saving the money up til u can buy the 1 u really want cause u won't be happy if u have to settle.
Good luck!

no get the bigger hard drive in the laptop. 120gigs is good. if u put it on the external one then you have to lug it around with the laptop. plus the laptop may have a warranty with the hard drive.

The external would be helpful incase anything happens to the hard drive on your new laptop. If the hard drive crashed, then you would at least have your files saved on your external hard drive. If you are looking for good ones, I would suggest Maxtor, their drives are great.

With the OS size eating more and more disk space and application doing the same, I would recommend at least going with an 80GB hard drive for the applications and OS...
Now for Data, get the external drive....

I,d have to get the 120gb, instead of the 40gb, then an external.
But thats just me, you,ll have faster access times, on the internal VS external.
