The egg.

It was laid by a Red Junglefowl, a Gallus species originating in Asia. It is not a chicken; it is, however, the ancestor of all chickens.

Somewhere down the line, one of the Red Junglefowl's eggs' DNA was mutated, and the egg produced a new kind of bird, a chicken. Which means, the Red Junglefowl's egg came before the chicken. And the first true chicken egg was laid by that chicken.

The answer to this depends on whether you are a creationist or and evolutionist. If you believe in creation then the chicken came first because god created it. If you are an evolutionist then the egg came first and it came from a bird which was almost but not exactly a chicken.

The egg. The species we know today as the chicken must come from an egg. Eggs existed long before chickens did. And whatever species of bird had a mutated offspring that became the chicken probably hatched from an egg.

It is doubtful a bird at one time gave birth to live babies and one of which became a chicken that suddenly developed the ability to lay eggs.

The egg. Because like plants it starts out small and eventually grows. And for the Christian believers like myself, God made the egg first so that the baby can have enough time to grow in order to crack out if the shell.
