Yes it happens from time to time.
On one of my big tanks we have 2 external filters and every time we clean it out we find fry in there regularly(alive and doing well!). They have a good food supply and oxygen rich water and they are protected from the adults. They get taken out anf put in a fry tank :)

This won't happen if you have an adequate cap on the end of your filtration tube and a top to your filter. You can buy a cap at the pet store for under five dollars.

Years ago our family had a gold fish in a little bowl and this one night we had a party and my uncle poured beer into the bowl . The next day the fish disappeared. We found it behind the stereo dried to a crisp.RIP lil Goldie.

The fish was sick. Healty fish do not get stuck in the filter. It was going to die anyway. Check your water perameters.

My saltwater tank has the filer behind it, and my same fish jumped over once into it and we thought he was a goner... now he is back and jumped over again and I cannot find him... again! Oh, and some of my babies guppies were sucked into a filter once.
