Well I don't know all about these things, but I'm a new person in town. So where do you send it? And yes I know, you send it to a publishing company.

First have the book critiqued by a reliable group of fellow writers who know a lot more than you do about writing and getting published. Listen to them and consider what they say.

If they say you have a best seller (and they won't but they may say its salable) send a query to as many publishers and agents as you can find that print your genre. Check their requirements. If you send the manuscript without being asked too, they WILL scrap it sight unseen. Do as they request, letter (with information they want) some will take it via email, Usually a synopsis and sometimes some pages or chapters (always send the first chapters and pages they want to know there's a hook to keep the reader reading past the first paragraph).

Its not easy to get published and you will get a lot of rejections (don't forget that SASE--self addressed stamped envelope) or you won't hear anything from the post queries. and be sure to make notes on all the queries you send out when and what responses you get. When you get a rejection, send out a new query.

Yes, it's highly unlikely that you will be publish without an agent. But, you must do your homework on the agents. There are several good directories that can be found in the library or bookstore that have addresses and stats for many good agents. You also need to package your manuscript in the standard professional manner. I suggest the book "A Novel Proposal". It's an excellent manual on the subject.

You don't. You hire an agent to do it for you. Publishers don't want an unsolicited manuscript. It will just end up in the trash, or in a huge pile of stuff that no one is ever going to read, let alone publish.
