Did you register the thing and get an ID from Apple. If you have then go to this forum http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=829. When you get the site you must log in with the ID it doesn't cost any money to have an ID. You ask your question they will help you if the problem persists. Have you tried getting an update for your iPod because it might need one. Are you using iTunes to sync your songs or are you using another software? You should get iTunes or the newest version. Do you have your iPod to automatically update your songs have you tried to manually synchronize the songs into your iPod after the problem ocurred. But what I really think you should do is restore your iPod it will not do anything to your songs or photos just restore it, it might work.

You're iPod shouldn't be broken, you probably just have your iPod set to "Automatic update." I hate that setting, and I'm guessing you already hate it too without knowing it.
What the "Automatic update" does is every time you plug your iPod in, iTunes will automatically update your iPod to exactly match your iTunes library. This means that anytime you change your iTunes library, iTunes will automatically update your iPod to match the iTunes library every time you plug it in (deleting songs in the process). For instance, if songs A,B,C and D were in your iTunes library the first time you put songs on your iPod, you would have songs A,B,C and D on your iPod. But if you later replaced those songs in your iTunes library with E, F, and G thinking you were merely changing a playlist on your computer, the next time you plug your iPod in, iTunes will automatically delete A,B,C and D from your iPod and replace them with E,F, and G (thereby matching your iPod music with your iTunes library).
What you want to do is set your iPod to "Manual." To do this:
1) Plug your iPod into your computer
2) Open iTunes (it'll do the automatically update because it's still set to "Automatic")
3) If you have the newest version of iTunes, you'll see a picture of your iPod, then two sections below it you'll see "Options"...check the box next to "Manually manage music"
4) Eject your iPod using the iTunes eject button to make sure this setting sticks.
The next time you plug in your iPod and open iTunes, the automatic update shouldn't happen anymore and you'll simply be able to drag and drop songs into your iPod.
One note, if you want to delete a music file from your iPod, you will have to delete it from the "Music" section (located right underneath your iPod name in the left column of iTunes) and not through a separate playlist. If you delete a song from a playlist on your iPod, the file itself is still stored in the iPod and taking up space until you go into the "Music" tab and delete the song there.

Hmm... You never said what kind of iPod it was...
Anyways, I may be able to help. I once had some sort of problem similar to yours and I had an iPod mini. I had no idea how to fix it, but I did. I'm now hearing theres some sort of reset button on the newer models, but you never said what kind of iPod you have.
