i did it having never done it prior to jumping right in. i made the supervisor love me and always bent over backwards and kissed the customers' asses. if the baked potato was hot enough, toss it. prime ribs too rare, trash it. i didn't please the chef. he hated me. i would never let him fix anything for me personally. but i was the quickest and most determined and made the most. part of it was winning over the supervisor. which station she assigned made all the difference in the world. got me through grad school. it was very physically demanding. running around with heavy trays and smiling and dreaming up compliments for the patrons. wow, didn't come natural. the sobs.

I don't know how old you are so, this all depends. You can get a good job with no experience. Dress up (dress slacks, nice shirt, tie) Go in to a nice place between 2- 4pm Mon. thru Thurs. Fill out an application. Ask to speak to a manager. Now with all this being said, make sure you put your all into the interview. Go to Morton's or McCormick&Schmick's ( a higher end place) These places hire people without experience if they believe they are professional enough to handle the postion. This can be a 50,000 a year job. So go in with that aditude. It's hard work but, can be very profitable. I'm a college graduate. I decided to stay in the restraunt biz because of the flexible hours and money. I make over 65 a year and am able to enjoy my life by taking time off and traveling. Good Luck. Like my Dad always said....It doesn't matter what you choose to do in life but, whatever you choose, do to the best of your ability!

The hours are lousy. You'll make the best money on the weekends and evenings. If you want to work days, sure, you'll have weekends and evenings off, but won't make much money. Truth is, in a nice place, you can really rake in the bucks in tips. Although, don't expect such a position as a first timer. In the long run, waiting tables is not the job you want. It's fine when you're younger, but it will take it's toll on your health. It's an excellent job when you're in college though.

It depends on where you live and where you work. Keep in mind most states pay servers below minimum wage. I know some states pay as low as $2.18 per hour plus tips of course. Some states like California, Oregon, Washington, etc must pay servers minimum wage. California minimum just went up to $7.50/hr so servers get that plus tips. If you work at a good restaurant you should be able to make decent money, but don't expect to work at a great restaurant with no experience. Figure out how much money you need to make and then figure how much that comes to per hour. Keep in mind a shift can be anywhere from 3-8 hours and most are only 4-5.
I put myself through college waiting tables. There were lunches I only made $20.00 in tips and nights I made over $200.00 in tips.
Good Luck! Keep in mind this is a job with no real career path unless you want to get involved in restaurant management.

Yes, there is good money. As for the best place, I would vote for a steak house or an italian restaurant. Just remember, the amount of the tip is also related to the amount of attention you pay to the customer's needs. You don't want to be there so much that you bother them, but you also don't want them looking around for you. kinda keep an eye from a distance and stop by to check on everything every 5-10 minutes. Watch their drinks for refills and recommend desert.

My guess is that you won't get really good tips or pay in your first job. But if you work hard, hustle, and make sure you take care of your customers, you can work your way up to the places where you CAN get better money.
A waitress wrote a book about the profession awhile ago. Check it out below.

There is great money in being a good server.
If you do not want to be the best then do not bother.
Only the good ones cash in. The more expensive the meal, the bigger the tip.

Higher end restaurants tend to yield higher tips. Remember after all a standard tip is 15%, so if the costumer has a high bill and actually follows the standard, you'll have a bigger tip, then you would say at a Ma and Pop restaurant.

yes. Tips are excellent, ecspecially if you are very friendly to the customers. TGI Fridays is good, or olive garden or chilis but if you are ineccperienced, i would try something like a local business, or start in fast food until you get the basic idea, and then apply at a sit-down resteraunt.
