It's perfectly normal. We all had bouts of hiccups prior to being born. Most agree that hiccups are due to an over stimulation of the phrenic nerve that innervates the diaphragm (the muscular wall separating the chest from the abdomen)--that's all.

In the book I got from the doctor and the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book, it actually said that hiccups multiple times a day could be a sign of fetal distress. So panicked and worried....I called the doctor and got in that day. My baby was fine! The doctor told me in rare cases, constant hiccups could be a sign of not enough oxygen. But that it would have to be constant....for more than 30-45 minutes straight. My daughter would just get them every few hours for like 5-8 minutes maybe. She got them at least 3-5 times a day! She is healthy and 15 months now! I would double check with your doctor just to be sure, but I am sure all i fine! Good Luck!!

When it comes to hiccups, I don't think there is a normal. My daughter got hiccups a lot and my son got them, but not as often. Both normal. If your child doesn't seem bothered I wouldn't worry about it. Babies are just little people. Some people get hiccups a lot and some don't, both are normal.

My third child is three weeks old and before he was born he got the hiccups at least two to three times a day. It is very normal. There is a wives tale that says lots of hiccups means the baby has lots of hair. This was the case with my third baby. My oldest two had no hair at all and this was has a great mop of black hair.

It's perfectly normal, not to mention cute! Hiccups are common in little babies because it's sign their digestive systems are developing normally and trying to work the kinks out. Just enjoy the feeling!
